Choosing a Beach & Coast tour
This is Albania's Ionian and Adriatic coast: Ksamil's string of small sandy bays, Saranda as the working port town next door, Vlora up north where the Riviera begins, and the boat trips out to the Karaburun Peninsula and Sazani Island. Here's the honest lay of it. Ksamil and Saranda sit 14km apart and work as one destination — Ksamil has the clear water and the beaches, but no ATMs and thin dining outside peak season; Saranda has the cash machines, the Corfu ferry, the bus station and the better restaurants. You'll use both. The water genuinely rivals the Greek islands across the channel, but Ksamil has been built up hard and fast — construction is constant and infrastructure hasn't kept pace. The Ksamil islands just offshore are reached only by paid boat or pedalo, not on foot. North of Saranda the coast turns wild: the Riviera runs about four hours up to Vlora over the Llogara Pass, a beautiful but slow, winding drive. Boat trips from Vlora reach Sazani's abandoned naval base, the sea cave of Haxhi Aliu, and Grama Bay, where sailors carved inscriptions into the rock over two millennia. Most tours here are boat days, beach days, and one big ancient site — Butrint.
Decide first whether you're basing in the far south (Ksamil/Saranda) or up around Vlora — they're four hours apart over the Llogara Pass, not a day-trip pairing. From Ksamil, the anchors are Butrint (the UNESCO site 7km south — allow three hours, go early morning or late afternoon to beat the Corfu tour groups), the Blue Eye spring (about 45 minutes inland, water ice-cold year-round), and a Lekuresi Castle sunset above Saranda. Private speedboat tours of the Ksamil coastline and islands typically run €350–500 for the boat, not per person; for groups of six or more, confirm the boat's size, shade and bathroom before booking — small boats on a long tour catch people out. From Vlora, the Karaburun and Sazani boat day leaves the port around 10:00 and returns by early evening. Carry cash: there are no ATMs in Ksamil, and few between Saranda and Himara. The Corfu ferry runs from Saranda, not Ksamil, so budget the 20-minute transfer to the port.
When to go
June and September are the sweet spot — warm enough to swim, far fewer crowds, and prices 30–40% below the July–August peak, when Ksamil beaches, parking and sunlounger prices all spike. July and August are hot and busy; you'll get the water but you'll share it. Saranda averages around 290 sunny days a year and stays mild, so late spring and early autumn are comfortable for sightseeing at Butrint and the museums. The Karaburun and Sazani boat trips run summer into autumn; outside that window, operators wind down and the sea gets unpredictable. Winter is quiet — the town works but most seafront and beach businesses close early or shut.
