Albania tour packages, explained

Four questions worth answering before you put money down.

What's in a package

Most Albania packages cover an English-speaking guide, transport between the stops, and entrance fees to the attractions on the itinerary. Multi-day ones usually add accommodation with breakfast, in hotels or guesthouses; lunch and dinner are included less often, mainly in remote places where there is no alternative kitchen. It varies by operator, so read the inclusions on the listing before you book.

When to book

Summer, June to September, suits beach and Riviera packages: warm water, everything open, and the coast at full volume. Spring and autumn — April to May, September to October — are better for cultural tours and mountain walking, with mild temperatures and far fewer people. Winter packages concentrate on cities, thermal spas and ski resorts.

How long to go for

Weekend packages of two to three days work as quick escapes from neighbouring countries. A week covers the major highlights properly. Ten to fourteen days reaches the places the shorter itineraries skip. Day tours slot in as add-ons at either end.

How to choose

Start with what you want to do rather than what you want to see: beaches point to the Riviera packages, walking to the Alps, layered history to the cultural tours. Then check the fitness level against the walking days, and the dates against the season. Most packages can be adjusted.
